Dr. Joyce Sitonik is unwavering in her commitment to help reduce premature mortality from non-communicable diseases through prevention and treatment and promoting mental health and well-being.

Dr. Sitonik is currently Head of Clinic Business Operations and AAR Wellness Program Coordinator. She has had a long career in Healthcare Management Programs both in the public and Private sectors in East Africa and Kenya in particular dating from as early as 2009 to date. AAR Healthcare Holdings of which AAR Healthcare Ltd is a subsidiary, is a medical service provider in East Africa that has been an active participant in the UN Global Compact since September 2008.

Dr. Sitonik is devoted to holistic and sustainable development projects that advance Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3). As part of her strategy to advance Global Goals through the company’s core business, she saw an opportunity for the company to leverage on existing technical capacity, brand positioning and heritage to view health risk management differently as a product. She lead in the design of tailor-made corporate wellness packages implemented through office based awareness and screening programs for Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and mental health.

She designed a clear process of linkage to specific interventions for high-risk cases and monitoring of response to interventions through wellness champions who manage over 1,000 patients. Working closely with the champions, she is able to receive timely reports on compliance to treatment, reviews by clinical specialist based on health risks and on serial laboratory tests to monitor progress. The program has had positive impact on cost of care to the patient because it enabled volume-based discounts on drug purchases, demand driven increase laboratory capacity (complexity of tests and number of machines), and growth in market share, brand equity and increase in net earnings.

AAR Wellness Program has resulted in a six-fold growth in the number of people screened for NCDs from just over 1,000 in 2016 to over 6,000 in 2018. The program has been able to successfully identify more than 100 cases with high risk for cancer and more than 500 new cases of high blood pressure. The commercialization of the program has been successful as it has yielded revenue reaching $350,000 in 2018.

Overall, the wellness program has high economic, environmental and social sustainability because all stakeholders find value in the program that is scalable and is already reducing hundreds of preventable deaths from NCDs.

Karen Basiye, Senior Manager Sustainability at Safaricom has been a devoted champion of Sustainability and the Global Goals in the corporate scene in Kenya. Driven by the conviction that business can be a force for good, she has passionately advocated for the uptake of the Goals and inspired other businesses to take action.

Safaricom is a provider of voice, data, financial services and enterprise solutions for a range of customers, small businesses and governments, using a variety of platforms. The integration of the SDGs has enabled the company to push the traditional boundaries of doing business to deliver shared value for people and planet. As a LEAD company in the UN Global Compact, Safaricom has been an active participant of Global Compact Network Kenya since 2006.

Karen has been at the forefront of leading the sustainability vision and ambition of the company of transforming lives as guided by 9 goals the company has prioritized.

Each goal in turn has been weaved into the company's business strategy as articulated in its purpose statement: We commit to deliver connectivity and innovative (Goal 9) products and services that will provide unmatched solutions to meet the needs of Kenyans by enabling access (Goal 10) through its technologies and partners (Goal 17) and by exploring opportunities in Health (Goal 3), Education (Goal 4) and Energy (Goal 7). Safaricom does so by managing its operations responsibly (Goal 12) and ethically (Goal 16). This will stimulate growth and generate value (Goal 8) for the company, society and economy.

At Safaricom, Karen has also contributed to the development of various projects and commitments under the 9 SDGs. She has also tracked Safaricom's economic and social contribution to Kenya by leading the True Value Study annually. Currently Safaricom contributes 6.5% to the Kenyan GDP. She has delivered support through the Thrive Global Programme with more than 95% of the company staff receiving health and wellbeing training. In addition, she also takes lead in developing the company's sustainability report and has mentored other Global Compact Network Kenya member companies in improving the quality of their environment, social and governance disclosures.

Adamson Karuhi, Marketing Officer at Green Pencils, has demonstrated how small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) can drive innovation to address the growing challenge around plastic pollution. Green Pencils manufactures high quality environment-friendly infinity road studs, branded pencils and pens from recycled paper as an alternative to plastic. The company has aligned its business strategy to deliver on Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12 on responsible consumption and production.
Adamson has supported efforts towards reengineering the company’s business model as well as spearheading the design process of pens to guarantee the plastic component in production is reduced. He has also leveraged his expertise in sales and marketing to drive awareness and uptake of the environment-friendly pencils, pens and infinity road studs amongst other businesses and consumers. Specifically, he has developed a concept that targets leading supermarkets in the country to conduct consumer awareness and sensitization campaigns targeting shoppers. Not only does this boost business, it also enlightens them to consciously protect the environment. 
Recognizing partnerships as key in delivering large scale impact, Adamson has sought support from the Government of Kenya through the Ministry of Industrialization and Enterprise Development, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Green Pencils has been participating in the Global Compact since August 2014 and the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact have given the company the right foundation for pursuing its business goals. 
In the future, he hopes to influence more consumers to make responsible and sustainable choices in their purchasing decisions.

Marion Wambua, Senior Communication and CSR Executive at Airtel Networks Kenya, is a leading advocate for quality education. She has worked to design Airtel’s social responsibility strategies that address many of Kenya’s social and economic challenges.

Airtel is the second largest telecommunications company in Kenya and is an active participant in the UN Global Compact since August 2014. The company is innovating and diversifying to reach a wider segment of the market with portfolios that meet Kenyans needs, contribute to development, and balance network quality and reliability.

Marion has worked tirelessly to align Airtel’s corporate strategy with defined Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with a focus on good health and wellbeing (Goal 3), quality education (Goal 4), clean water and sanitation (Goal 6) and sustainable cities and communities (Goal 11) while leveraging on strategic partnerships to drive impact.

In delivering quality education in underserved communities, Marion is spearheading the Free Internet for Schools program, which has succeeded in connecting over 300 schools across 30 counties in Kenya. The program is providing access to information and educational resources to students thereby increasing opportunities for learning in and beyond the classroom. She is directly involved in vetting the schools to ensure they are suitable to participate in the program and provides follow up support to address any technical issues that may arise.

Marion also manages Project Ngulia, a partnership between Airtel and Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary located at Tsavo West National Park by offering tracking and monitoring services as well as providing water tanks to schools around the national park to address the challenges of human-wildlife conflict which have worsened over time due to water scarcity.

The two projects leverage on Airtel’s core strength in providing technological solutions to meet SDG challenges.

Marion has also been an avid advocate of the 10 Principles of the UN Global Compact both within the company and externally with various partners- bringing them to awareness and sharing the good practices the company is embracing to advance SDGs.
